9 Songs that define a 90s childhood

90s music playlist90s music playlistI could have probably made this list about 100 songs long, but if I did that I’m not sure I’d be able to honestly say I listened to them when they came out. But I would have certainly been loving them during the noughties! (and now, guilty pleasure).

1. Barbie Girl by Aqua.

I remember watching the music video to this SO many times. Please say I’m not the only one who’d pretend they were Barbie whilst singing to it?

2. Wannabe by Spice Girls.

The ultimate classic. I don’t know anyone who didn’t love these guys (and doesn’t still love them, London Olympics anyone?). I’m pretty sure everyone tried to own every piece of memorabilia they could, the movie was a particular fav of mine. I always wanted to be Sporty Spice.

3. Baby One More Time by Britney Spears.

Not a personal fav of mine, but it’s definitely one we can all appreciate! I remember spending hours in my room making up dances to Britney songs by myself. I completely forgot about that until just now. How embarrassing. LET’S MOVE ON.

4. Tragedy by Steps.

I loved Steps. Really did. But this song kinda got ruined for me on holiday when I was about 6 in Greece. Some of the holiday reps who did all the kids entertainment asked if I wanted to join other kids doing a performance of the song. Little old introverted, quiet, awkward, shy me? No. No I did not. But being introverted and quiet and awkward and shy meant I didn’t know how to say no. So I ended up on stage in front of all holiday goers in all white and a cowboy hat dancing to this song. It makes me cringe still now.

5. C’est la vie by B*Witched.

Oh, B*Witched. My dad actually got me a pirate copy of their CD somehow. I never thought to ask why or how, just thought it was weird that mine was all gray and the girl next door’s was bright orange. I did completely fall for these guys, if I had to pick one from this list to listen to forever it would be this, easily. I think it was the denim jackets.

6. I Want It That Way by Backstreet Boys.

I’m just watching the music video now, and they are rocking the all white clothes look. Omg their dramatic dance moves are hilarious. When I think of this song the only lyric I really remember (apart from the name) is TELL ME WHY. Now I think about it, I’m not actually sure what they wanted to know why about?? Why what? Anyone?

7. Never Ever by All Saints.

Something we could all get angsty about and woefully sing along to whilst pretending we were strong independent women in relationships. Or pine over the boy in your class, which ever took your fancy.

8. S Club Party by S Club 7.

Esssssssss Cluuuuuuub. Admit it, you sang that! You can’t not. Who else watched the TV show? S Club Juniors, though? Not the one.

9. We’re Going to Ibiza by Vengaboys.

The main thing about this I remember is the music video. The cartoon of people dancing in front of random tourist attractions. I can’t help but dance a little bit when this is playing, if only I could actually be on a sunny island as well.

Are there any other songs that were particular favs? I’ve barely touched the surface with this list!!

  1. Ahhhh, love this. I’m such a 90’s freak and I’m so happy about the fact that I was a child in the 90s. The music will be loved forever. I can be in the worst mood but when I blast some Spice Girls or BSB, everything is good. I would love to attend a 90s party, right now. 😀 I’m planning on writing a post about my 90s childhood and some of these artists will definitely be included. 🙂
